Five Things not to miss when you are in Kerala
Crunchy banana chips – Raw or ripe bananas diced and fried in oil is a popular snack. It can get a little addictive though. You put one into your mouth and you would need a handful. Goes best with hot tea
Thattu kadas – Traditional tea shops where the simple village folks gather, drink tea, read newspapers and talk. Everything ranging from international politics to local gossip is dissected and analysed at length. Steamed cake (puttu) and Kadala (black gram) is the mostly ordered breakfast. They also serve hot , spicy or sweet evening snacks.
Kathakali – This traditional dance of Kerala is definitely a unique experience. Elaborate costumes complete with head gear and vibrant colours are sure to fascinate tourists. The dancers enact different stories on stage and communicate through facial gestures. That said, this is no everyone’s cup of tea.

Kerala Landscape
All things beautiful seem to be corralled into the 38.863 square kilometers that make up the state of Kerala. On the west, the state is hugged by a spectacular 580 – kilometer coastline of towering cliffs, frenetic ports, tranquil sands and he mercurial waters of the Arabian Sea. The sylvan mountain ranges o the Western Ghats stand sentinel over the state’s eastern border, rolling hills and verdant valleys carpet the midlands, and over 40 rivers join hands with countless streams,tributaries,canals,ponds and lakes to form an imposing 1920 – Kilometer water network that criss-crosses every nook and corner of the land.
The first thing that captures the visitor’s senses are the countless shades of green –dark-green, light – green, emerald, jade, olive ,bottle-green, aquamarine, chartreuse, and a million other undefined shades in between. The fecundity of the land is quite astonishing, from the regiments of coconut palms that guard the coast , to the endless swathes of paddy fields: from front yards adorned with mango trees and proud pots of colourful flowers to back gardens that burst with pumpkins, banana plants, curry leaf bushes, gourds and more : from rubber estates that take over entire valleys to luxuriant plantations perched on lush hills.

Kerala Performing Arts
Kathakali
It is a world famous classical dance drama- known as the king of performing arts- performed in a Koothaambalam( art performance temple) by skilled artists. The artist has to undergo several years of hard core training. This art is a skilful combination of literature( mainly based on the epics of India), music ( vocal and instrumental),charming costumes,elaborate facial make up(chutti), acting and dancing. Each character's mentaly quality can be understood by his or her costumes and facial makeup.

Kerala Festival - ONAM
ONAM
There is no better celebration of the happy accord of different faiths than the 10-day harvest festival of Onam, which falls in the Malayalam month of Chingm(August/Septemebr). It is said that the mythical King Mahabali, a much loved ruler of Kerala, returns to visit his subjects during this period. The entire state, regardless of religion,caste or creed comes together to celeberate his homecoming with decorations,music , dance and lavish feast.
Onam has also become something of a tourist attraction. Landmark buildings in the major cities glitter with lights, and music,dance and food festivals are held at important venues. Onam also coincides with the height of the Vallamkali, the boat race season. The Aranmula Boat race on the Pamba River and the Payipad Jalotsavam Alappuzha are just some of the splendid regattas held at this time, complete with grand processions and throngs of enthralled spectators.
But for all the pomp and economy, Onam is a family occasion. From the first day the festival, Atham to the last day of Thiruvonam, houses in Kerala wear a festive face. Banana leaves and coconut fronds are draped over doorways. Floral decorations, called pookkalam, adorn the thresholds of homes. Onam is also a time for dressing up, in brand new clothes called onakkodi.
The highlight of the Onam festival is he onasadhya – the traditional Onam feast on Thiruvonam day. Malayalis around the world may have relinquished many of the other rituals associated with the festival, but most will preserve with the tradition of sitting down to this hearty lunch, time and domestic help permitting. In Kerala, the onasadhya is followed by much revelry. Ladies swirl gracefully around a traditional brass lamp, clapping rhythmically as they perform Thiruvathirakali. Folk dancers go from house to house enacting ethnic dances such as Pulikali(tiger dance) and Karadikali(bear dance). In rural areas, men and women sing traditional Onam songs as they sway on swings. Festivities vary across the state but one thing remains constant: the spirit of togetherness, as the whole of Kerala unities in one glorious celebration.
